SHABWA, 15th October, 2017 (WAM) -- The Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, today began distributing a shipment of 108 tonnes of therapeutic medicines and medical supplies from the UAE to hospitals and health centres in Ataq, the capital city of Shabwa Governorate.

The ERC delivered the medical aid, including four trucks of rescue supplies, to the local Public Health and Population Office, with the attendance of Abdrabbuh Hashla Nasser, Secretary-General of the Local Council of the Governorate, and Nasser Hussein Al Baasi, Deputy General Manager of the Health and Population Office in the Governorate.

Mohammed Al Muhairi, Head of the ERC Team in Shabwa, stated that this support is part of their efforts to ease the effects of illnesses, a response to an appeal from the General Secretariat of the Local Council in Shabwa, and an answer to a call for help from the local Public Health and Population Office, Ataq Central Hospital and other hospitals and health centres in the governorate's districts. The aid is also part of the UAE's efforts to offer help and material aid to the people of Shabwa, to face the difficulties and urgent needs of those suffering from illnesses and other humanitarian cases in the governorate's various regions and districts, as an essential humanitarian duty, he added.

Al Muhairi stressed that offering health support to Yemenis and their health centres and establishments is a priority of the ERC's plan in Shabwa, as it considers this a humanitarian and moral duty, representing the solidarity between the two countries, especially under the difficult circumstances experienced by Yemen.

Nasser praised the generous support offered by the UAE's leadership, government and people to Yemen, and Shabwa governorate in particular, especially in the area of health, in light of the difficult circumstances experienced by his country due to the war started by the coup supporters. This generous support is not new to the UAE, which is always at the forefront of supporting and aiding Yemen and its people through challenging times and circumstances, he added.

Al Baasi expressed his appreciation to the UAE and its humanitarian arm in Yemen, the ERC, along with its team, for their considerable efforts to provide overall support for the health sector in Shabwa.
