(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) SAINT PETERSBURG, Oct 14 (KUNA) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday slammed imposing restrictions on parliamentary relations, considering it as an unacceptable matter.
In a speech delivered during the opening of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference, he indicated that there are several attempts, during the last period, to impede parliamentary dialogue and communications amongst lawmakers across the globe.
He added that he rejected imposing sanctions on lawmakers and parliamentary delegations, saying it is an unconstructive approach.
Such policies constitute violations to cooperation amongst lawmakers and right of countries to freedom of expression, he stated.
He vowed that Russia would continue to develop its democratic institutions and promote legislatures.
Upon a request from the Syrian authorities and based on the international law, Russia provided aid to Syria to defeat terrorism, he pointed out, renewing his call for the necessity to counter terrorism without using double standards.
Putin urged the international community to offer assistance to post-war Syria, and contribute to social and economic development in that Arab country.
He urged also the international community to work to ease tensions and prevent new conflicts based on national and ethnic grounds.
In a similar speech, speaker of the Russian parliament's upper house (Federation Council) Valentina Matviyenko affirmed the importance of the IPU's role as a platform for dialogue to promote the democratic process in the world.
She underlined the significance of parliamentary diplomacy when traditional diplomatic methods are disrupted, saying the mission of lawmakers is the ability to reach consensus and agreements in all cases.
Meanwhile, outgoing president of IPU Saber Chowdhury referred to the disaster of Muslim Rohingya minority in Myanmar, saying they are facing continued arbitrary displacement.
For his part, Chairman of the Russian State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin lauded diversity and multiculturalism.
He stated that Russia has owns a rich co-existence experiment; It is a multinational state with around 190 ethnic groups who speak about 200 languages. (pickup previous) as.hm
