Kuwait- Saudis discover 41 genes to identify hereditary cancer

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RIYADH, Oct 14 (KUNA) -- Saudi King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre has realized a significant scientific achievement, the first of its kind in the region, designing a 41-gene package.

Named "hope" by the research team, the new package can identify patients suffering from family cancer, or those with genetic predisposition to the disease, through a blood sample, the Saudi Press Agency said.

The package has demonstrated effectiveness through tests on 1,300 patients suffering from the most common types of cancer in the country, team leader, Dr, Khaula Al-Kerie said.

A tiny blood sample, less than 1mm, is enough for the package to detect hereditary reasons behind the disease for many patients, she added. She noted that the scientific research was motivated by the lack of clinics specialized in hereditary cancers across the Kingdom, and the absence of the rate of the disease among Saudis.
