(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), joined the rest of theworld to mark World Standards Day, which falls on October 14 every year. The theme of this year's celebration was 'Standards Make Cities Smarter'.

Eng Sami bin Salim al Sahib, acting director general of Standards and Metrology in MoCI said that the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), in cooperation with the International Electrotechnical Commission and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) celebrated the theme of the day.

He added that selection of this year's theme aimed at conveying a message that sufficient fresh water, universal access to cleaner energy, ability to travel efficiently from one point to another, a sense of safety and security are the kinds of promises modern cities must fulfil if they are to stay competitive and provide a decent quality of life to their citizens.

He pointed out that building a smart city is highly complex. Every city faces its own challenges and requires its own mix of solutions. Standards open the door for bigger options.
