First flight on St Helena has landed

(MENAFN) The first planned commercial flight service to the isolated British island of St Helena in the south Atlantic has landed in one piece, ending the long dependence on a ship that sails every 3 weeks.

In a hope that the service, funded by the UK would encourage tourism and help make St Helena more self-reliant, but British media called it "the most useless airport in the world".

St Helena depends on the 52m pound/year from Britain, and officials look forward to increasing tourism which will make it more self-reliant.

A spokeswoman from the Department for International Development said: "It will boost its tourism industry, creating the opportunity to increase its revenues, and will bring other benefits such as quicker access to healthcare for those living on the island."
