(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, Oct 14 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has continued over the past week its aid for people in need in the region, providing care and support for those in need of medical help or vocational training, thus living up to its "Humanitarian Center" status bestowed by UN.
The Gulf country covered expenses of treatment of 180 civilians in the Iraqi city of Mosul who needed artificial limbs.
Dr. Omar Al-Kandari, Kuwait's Consul General in Irbil, told KUNA this was part of the medical projects carried out by Kuwait to help displaced Iraqis and those affected by the recent military operations.
There is a large number of people benefiting from the Kuwaiti medical aid, he said, citing the performance of surgeries and delivery of about 400 tons of medicines to hospitals in Mosul.
Kuwait has also provided last August about 55 tons of medical aid to hospitals in Mosul and the Kurdistan region in general, and has treated more than 500 Iraqis through funds provided by Kuwaiti charities, he said.
Kuwait also funded the construction of five medical centers in camps set up for displaced Iraqis in Irbil and Dohuk.
Meanwhile, Kuwait's Al-Salam Humanitarian and Charity Society inaugurated last Monday a factory for tailoring and handicraft works for Syrian women refugees in the town of Sanliurfa in Southeast Turkey.
The large building was established and equipped by donations amounting to USD 600,000 from citizens of Kuwait and other GCC countries, said the society general director and chairman, Dr. Nabil Al-Aoun, in a statement at the inauguration ceremony.
More than 7,000 female refugees will be either employed or trained at the factory, forecast to produce one million pieces per year, he said.
Society's teams visited a school and society for the orphans on the Syrian side of the border, distributing aid. They also went to Suleiman Shah refugee camp to deliver food and clothes.
Suleiman Shah Camp is located on Turkish territory, near the southern city of Urfa. It is home to some 30,000-50,000 Syrian refugees.
In the Jordanian capital, Kuwait's embassy in Amman took part in a "Diplomatic Bazaar," a charity fair whose revenues go for orphans.
The embassy is keen on participating in the annual event that emphasizes solidarity and interdependence with the orphans cared for by the society, Kuwaiti Ambassador Hamad Al-Duaij told KUNA at the opening of the event.
More than 50 embassies and consulates are taking part in this year's fair, that embodies concepts of social responsibility and enhances the spirit of the noble humanitarian work, he added.
He underlined Kuwait's commitment to backing humanitarian efforts around the globe to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and the needy.
For his part, Chairman of the Kuwait-based International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) Dr. Abdullah Al-Maatouq emphasized that Kuwait has become one of the world major donors thanks to the unlimited support of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
In a symposium held in Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, under the theme "Humanitarian Work, Kuwait's Leading Role," Al-Maatouq, also Advisor at the Amir Diwan, said that His Highness the Amir's support was reflected in Kuwait's hosting of three international aid pledging conferences for Syria and co-chairing a fourth one in London.
These conferences raised USD 1.5 billion in 2013, USD 2.4 billion in 2014, USD 3.8 billion in 2015 and USD 10 billion in 2016. Kuwait donated a total of USD 1.6 billion to Syria in the four conference.
Moreover, His Highness the Amir has launched a heap of generous funds and initiatives to offer aid to victims of earthquakes and famines in several countries around the world, Al-Maatouq said.
He pointed out that this humanitarian role has prompted the United Nations to honor His Highness the Amir and proclaim him a 'Humanitarian Leader' and Kuwait as a 'Humanitarian Center.' Al-Maatouq said that one of the most prominent features of the charitable work in Kuwait is the fruitful partnership between public, private and civil society organizations to serve and help the needy.
