(MENAFN) An announcement that the US and Israel will be leaving the UN's UNESCO came after Washington accused it of anti-Israeli bias.
State Department spokeswoman stated: "This decision was not taken lightly, and reflects US concerns with mounting arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in the organisation, and continuing anti-Israel bias."
Disappointed by the decision, UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova said: "At the time when conflicts continue to tear apart societies across the world, it is deeply regrettable for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations agency promoting education for peace and protecting culture under attack."
Washington has already stopped its funding for UNESCO 6 years ago, when the body acknowledged Palestine as a full member.
Netanyahu told world leaders that UNSCO was advocating "fake history" after it assigned Hebron and the two attached shrines at the center as a "Palestinian World Heritage Site in Danger".
