UAE- Zayed Charity Marathon 2018 to support cancer hospital in Egypt

CAIRO, 11th October, 2017 (WAM) -- The Zayed Charity Marathon will be staged on 6th January 2018 in Egyptian city of Luxor for the fourth running year, announced Juma Mubarak Al Junaibi, UAE Ambassador to Egypt, in a press conference on Wednesday in capital Cairo.

Being organised by the Armed Forces Officers Club in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Cairo, the Zayed Marathon honours the country's founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed, an avid supporter of kidney charities, and is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Proceeds of the race, held in memory of Sheikh Zayed to raise money for the treatment of patients, will go to Shefaa Al Orman hospital in Luxor for the treatment of Cancer,'' Al Junaibi said, noting Egypt is third leg for the charity marathon after New York and Abu Dhabi.

The ambassador expressed his confidence that the race would witness unprecedented turn out as it will coincide with the launch of the Year of Zayed 2018.

''The charity run has gained international recognition and reputation since it was first launched in New York in 2015,'' he noted.

Nabila Makram, Egyptian Minister of Immigration and Expatriate Affairs, thanked the UAE for allocating the proceeds of the 2018 run for the Shefaa Al Orman hospital.

Hussein Shoukry, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shefaa Al Orman Foundation, also spoke at the press conference praising the UAE's support for Egypt.

''I am happy to have the marathon being held on the launch of the Year of Zayed in 2018,'' he said.

Husam Qabani, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shefaa Al Orman Foundation, said the proceeds of the race will be used to fund the third phase of the hospital.

Members of the marathon's organising committee attended the press conference.
