By Khalid Kazimov – Trend:

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has expressed full support for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) amid a possible plan by the US to designate the elite revolutionary guards as a terrorist group.

'Through its support for the nations of Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, the IRGC has humiliated the IS [terrorist group] and that is why you [presumably the US] are angry,' Rouhani told an administrative session on Wednesday.

'The IRGC has always stood against the terrorists. If you planned to keep the IS in the region for 20 years, you are right to be mad at the IRGC,' Iranian media quoted Rouhani as saying.

If the US wants to take any measures against the IRGC, that would be a repeated mistake, he added.

Rouhani further said the Guards are popular with Iranians, saying the IRGC has protected the country's national interests in dangerous situations.

'The IRGC is not only popular by Iranian nation but also with the nation of Iraq because it saved Baghdad. The IRGC is also popular with Iraq's Kurds because it saved Erbil. The IRGC is also popular among the people of Damascus and Syria because it saved Damascus. It is also popular in Lebanon,' he said.

The remarks came ahead of President Donald Trump's announcement on his final decision on how he wants to contain the Islamic Republic. Many suggest that he is planning to decertify Iran's compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal. Trump is also expected to designate the elite force, IRGC, as a terrorist organization.
