Amman, Oct 9 (Petra) –– Prime Minister Hani Mulki Monday received a delegation of US Congressional aides and reviewed with them the historic ties between the two countries.

Mulki outlined the political and economic reform programme Jordan had undertaken, and thanked Washington for its aid that helped the Kingdom carry out its reform and development plans.

Mulki said that despite the regional turbulence and instability, his government had held three free and transparent elections- parliamentary, municipal and decentralisation- that reflected the people's hopes and aspirations.

He pointed out that the Kingdom today faces economic challenges due to the repercussions of hosting around 1.3 million Syrian refugees, the disruption in Egyptian gas supplies and border closures that led to a rise in export costs, factors, which, he said had contributed to a rise in the county's debt.

The government is implementing a national fiscal and structural reform programme to enhance the economy's resilience and self-reliance in its efforts to address the economic challenge, he said.

The prime minister said Jordan seeks to see stability in Syria and hopes for creating the conditions for the return of Syrian refugees to their country.

He said Jordan's cooperation with the United States and other world nations had helped to achieve real victories against terrorism that would pave
the way for the return of stability and calm to the region and to usher in the start of the reconstruction phase in Syria and Iraq.

Mulki said that Jordan had adopted a holistic approach to fight terrorism and spread awareness on its perils on countries and peoples, acting on three fronts; military, security and ideological.

He said Jordanian armed forces and security forces had been in a state of war and on alert for the past six years in order to spare the country from the evils of terrorism, drugs and smuggling.

The prime minister stressed the need for continued support to Jordan as a stabilizing factor in the region.

The visiting US Congressional aides commended Jordan's pivotal role and the reform and development programme it had undertaken, for which the Kingdom had become a regional model.
