In a major move to further strengthen country's cyber security, a joint initiative between the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and Turkey's leading research agency was launched yesterday.

The research collaboration aims at developing innovative solutions to Qatar's cyber security needs. The programme 'Academia-Industry Cooperation on Cyber Security has been developed by QNRF, as part of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R & D), and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.

It also aims to pool knowledge, expertise, and resources in tackling cyber-safety priorities of Qatar and Turkey.

'Academia-Industry Cooperation on Cyber Security was launched at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) in the presence of Fikret Ozer, Ambassador of Turkey to Qatar, representatives from the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Transport and Communications and several other dignitaries.

The strategic importance of cyber security, the need for wider awareness on the subject, the role of research and innovation in safeguarding Qatar's cyberspace and critical infrastructure were the subjects highlighted during the event.

'The blockade has highlighted the challenges that Qatar faces and the country has also re-enforced the importance of innovation, collaboration and unified efforts for addressing these challenges as well as need to enhance our resilience and security for our systems. It has not restricted our research and innovation, it has only given us extra momentum, because necessity creates focus on science and innovation which are capable of fixing what politics alone can not. During the blockade of Qatar, we often hear the word diplomacy; our collaboration with TÜBİTAK is science diplomacy, said Dr Hamad Al-Ibrahim, Executive Vice President, QF R & D.

'This bilateral cooperation between QNRF and TÜBİTAK will focus first on cyber security challenges that Qatar and Turkey share, but this is just the beginning. It will ultimately extend into other areas of collaboration designed to address both nations' strategic priorities, he added. 'It will demonstrate how cross-sector partnerships involving all research and development stakeholders can increase the impact and benefits of science and innovation. For both Qatar and Turkey, it will open new avenues for research and innovation that brings value to our economies and tangible benefit to our societies, he Al Ibrahim noted. The joint initiative will address three key areas as, cloud and big data security, security systems in mobile devices and applications, and critical infrastructure security.

All projects will involve collaboration between a research institute or university, and a commercial company or research end-user, from each country, with the aim of laying the foundations for enduring research and innovation ties between Qatar and Turkey. Also Captain Medawi Saeed Al Qahtani, Head Officer of Cyber Crime Investigation Centre at the Ministry of Interior, made a presentation on 'Cybercrime in Financial Transactions and Khalid Al Hashmi, Undersecretary Assistant for Cyber Security at the Ministry of Transport and Communications discussed about the 'National Cyber Security Strategy. A panel of experts also had a discussion session on Cyber Security - A Global Challenge Requiring Global Collaboration.
