(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The fourth Regional Trade Policy Course (RTPC) for the Arab and Middle Eastern Members and Observers of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in partnership with Sultan Qaboos University and the Government of the Sultanate of Oman commenced at SQU today. 21 officials from nine Arab countries are participating in the course that will run for eight weeks from 8 October to 30 November.
Welcoming the participants, H.H. Sayyidah Dr. Mona bint Fahad Al Said, SQU Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Cooperation, said that SQU is honored to renew the meeting with the participants of the 4th RTPC course. 'SQU hosted this course for four consecutive years from 2014 to 2017. This demonstrates the capabilities and potentials of this young university, which has enormous potential to host high profile international events and forums, thanks to the skills and technical capabilities of its staff and academicians', she said.
Dr. Houcine Boughanmi, Associate Professor and WTO Chair at SQU, said that this is the fourth consecutive year that SQU hosts the RTPC for MENA region. 'Looking back to the last three years, we are proud to say that RTPC has trained around 100 government officials from all Arab countries who are now in the upfront of WTO Work in their respective ministries. Many of these participants have climbed the ladder and participated in level 3, more advanced training courses held in Geneva and the region. This has enhanced the capacity of the region to deal with the emerging trade challenges facing the region and to take full advantage of the multilateral trading system', he said.
Mustapha Sekkate, Economic Affairs Officer at WTO, said that his organization places great importance on WTO training and technical assistance activities. 'The Director General as well as WTO members recognize that a well-functioning multilateral trading system does not only require strengthened trading rules that are non-discriminatory and fair, it also requires an understanding by its Members and Observers of the opportunities that such rules provide. That why WTO considers trade related technical assistance and capacity building programs to be core and strategic importance to WTO', Sekkate said.
