Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) is working to enhance the medical sector in Mosul, Iraq, with funding from Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
QRCS's medics have completed the project of operating a field hospital in Hamam Al-Alil, a town south of Mosul, which offered all medical services for the Iraqis displaced from eastern districts due to the military operations.
In a statement, Dr. Ahmed Al-Shafei, director of the field hospital, said it was a full-fledged hospital with all necessary medical equipment and staff to provide a full range of health care services for the injured victims of war.
With a capacity of 45 beds, the hospital had two operating rooms with state-of-the-art surgical equipment, intensive care unit, X-ray unit, medical lab, pharmacy, sterilization & equipment unit, blood bank, and 17-bed emergency department to accommodate the increasing numbers of war injuries.
Till completion of the project with the end of war in Mosul, QRCS's medical staff had received 9,850 patients, who enjoyed top-quality health care and treatment. This included 548 surgeries such as leg/thigh external fixation, vascular screening, femoral artery bypass grafting, laparotomy, wound cleansing & suturing, appendectomy, and splinter removal.
The radiology department served around 2,500 patients, and the lab performed 4,500 pathological tests.
The field hospital, Dr. Al-Shafei explained, was run by 100 people in all departments, including 10 surgeons (general, orthopedic, and cardiovascular), two anesthetists, 12 general practitioners, as well as 30 nurses, pharmacists, and lab/radiology technicians. The nonmedical personnel involved administrative staff, security, ambulance drivers, registrars, and logistics officers.
Since the end of 2016, QRCS have conducted several health care projects with funding from QFFD, notably inaugurating health centers at IDP camps (Khazir, Hasansham, and Debaga); supplying medicines, equipment, and furniture to nine health centers in western Mosul; rehabilitating and operating the Mosul General Hospital in Wadi Hajar, operating the Mosul Al-Jadida Health Center and Sports Medicine Center, operating mobile clinics at destination hubs in Badush and Yarmouk, and other major health care projects.
