Minister of Transport and Communications H E Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti affirmed that Qatar has overcome the impacts of the siege. He added that a metro station would be opened this month and a train would be ready for public display. The second batch of the metro vehicles had arrived in Doha, while the third is on the way.
He added a center would be opened to introduce children to public transport and its importance in the community.
The Ministry plans to build an integrated transport system that is fully and self-reliant on Qatar and its neighbouring countries, with which it has bilateral agreements, Al Sulaiti said in a press statement on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between Qatar Foundation for Social Work and the Ministry of Transport and Communications at the inauguration of the call centre and hotline of the Protection and Social Rehabilitation Center (Aman). Qatar's economy has proved its strength and robustness against the crisis with the inauguration of the Hamad Port, which the largest port in the Middle East.
The port has an annual capacity of 7.5 million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), is the materialisation of Qatar's plan to diversify its economy and achieve self-reliance. The port has general cargo terminal with a capacity of 1.7 million tonnes annually, a terminal for cereals with a capacity of one million tonnes, a terminal to receive vehicles with a capacity of 500,000 vehicles, a terminal for livestock, a terminal for coastguard vessels and a terminal for marine support and backup.
The Minister said Mwani Qatar has targeted major ports in Oman, India, China, Pakistan and other major destinations. It has adopted the latest technology systems and managed to connect Hamad port with 57 international ports in the region and beyond.
Hamad Port is equipped with accurate inspection devices, which enables the inspection of goods without human effort, putting the port among the world's largest in terms of the number and quality of the equipment fitted to ensure fast and efficient service of containers and cargoes. Mwani and Milaha have launched a number of new maritime lines between Hamad Port and different ports of Oman, Kuwait, Turkey, India and Pakistan in the last three months.
