QU promotes awareness on intellectual property


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar University (QU) recently held its Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) Awareness Day with the aim of promoting and raising community awareness on the protection of intellectual property at QU.
The event was organised by the newly-established QU Innovation and Intellectual Property (IIP) Office, an arm of the QU Research Planning and Development Office and under the auspices of QU vice-president for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Mariam al-Maadeed.
It included presentations delivered by intellectual property experts from QU and institutions from the public and private sectors.
Speakers were QU College of Law assistant professor of Law Dr Mohamed Sayed Fares, QU Center for Entrepreneurship Assistant Professor Dr Arsalan Safari, head of Intellectual Property Awareness Administration at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) Ahmed M al-Sulaiti, legal expert at the MEC Nival Nabil and patent attorney at Saba & Co Intellectual Property Namir Bachir Sioufi.
They discussed topics such as 'Copyright and the university: protecting your works, 'Innovation and intellectual property in small businesses, 'The role of the Ministry of Economy and Commerce's Intellectual Property Awareness Administration, 'The Role of the Ministry of Economy and Commerce's Intellectual Property Administration in obtaining patents in Qatar, and 'Filing patent application and PCT.
IIP Office manager Dr Mohamed Salem Abou El Farag provided a brief on the office's functions and roles, such as promoting innovation, protecting all types of IP and enhancing IP awareness among the QU community, supporting IP enforcement, marketing QU IP rights, and negotiating IP licensing agreements.
Prof al-Maadeed noted that the newly-established QU-IIP Office would contribute to advancing QU research, inventions and IP profile, while seeking to make research knowledge readily accessible by the community, industry and researchers without them violating the rules and regulations laid down.
QU director of Research Planning and Development Dr Husam Younes said, 'Creativity generates new competitive opportunities for individual researchers in particular and the university in general. Supporting new innovative ideas and approaches will improve the regional economy that is based on innovation and knowledge. Moreover, it is crucial for solving many significant challenges such as health and environmental problems.
