Iraq pulls out candidate for UNESCO's top post to back Egypt's


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD, Oct 5 (KUNA) -- Iraq has withdrawn own candidate for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s top post to help unite Arab votes behind Egypt's candidate Mushira Khattab.

In a press statement, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced that Iraq has informed Egypt that the Iraqi candidate Dr. Saleh Al-Hasnawi has opted out of the race to rally more support to Egyptian candidate Khattab.

It added that the move embodies the growing high-level coordination between the two Arab countries in regional and international agencies.

The ministry hopes gesture would give impetus to bilateral relations and takes it to new high.

It also wished full success for the Egyptian candidate.

UNESCO's Executive Board is scheduled to nominate the new Director-General for the Organization on October 9th.

The winner will be proposed for election to all of the Organization's 195 Member States on 10 November, during the forthcoming 39th session of the General Conference of UNESCO (30 October to 14 November).

Eight candidates are now competing for the post. She or he will succeed Irina Bokova (Bulgaria) who will have served two four-year terms at the head of UNESCO. (end) ahh.ibi
