Kuwait stresses importance of implementing all disarmament agreements

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Oct 5 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has reiterated its firm position on the implementation of all relevant agreements related to disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

This statement was delivered by Advisor of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations Talal Al-Fassam, at the UN General Assembly's First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, Wednesday.

The non-proliferation of nuclear weapons agreement should be applied with nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy, he said.

He praised the success of the High-level meeting last September to discuss nuclear non-proliferation, and looking forward of a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on nuclear disarmament in 2018.

He also stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to organize a conference on Middle East free of nuclear weapons as soon as possible in the presence of all the countries of the region, including Israel.

Israel continues to refuse to join the non-proliferation agreement or even sign the IAEA Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement to avoid the IAEA to inspect them, he said.

Kuwait reiterates its condemnation of all nuclear tests that endanger the lives of innocents and threaten international peace and security. The Korean Peninsula is witnessing nuclear tests and the launching of ballistic missiles by North Korea, which is a source of concern not only for Kuwait but also for the international community as a whole.

The dangers of nuclear weapons and its effects do not recognize the national or regional borders, but go beyond it to reach the farthest cities and villages, which could kill millions and leave its dangerous effects on the environment, he said. (end) asf.sma.ss
