French police make several arrests after Marseille knife attacks

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Oct 3 (KUNA) -- French anti-terrorist police have arrested "at least two" suspects following Sunday's knife attack that killed two young women at the Marseille railway station, French media said Tuesday.

The attacker, who was shot dead by French troops on patrol, has been tentatively identified as Ahmad Hanachi, a 29-year-old Tunisian national with a long series of criminal acts to his credit and has used several identities over the past 12 years.

He was last arrested on Friday in Lyon for shoplifting but was released only hours before he stabbed the two young women to death.

The so-called Islamic State has tried to claim the Marseille attacks but officials here have urged caution as there appears to be no direct link, for now, between the perpetrator and the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.

French daily "Le Figaro" said on its news service that the police raids were carried out the vicinity of Marseille during the day and at least two people were detained, but other media said three or more individuals were picked up in a series of raids. (end) jk.hb
