(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Royal Hospital for the first time in the sultanate successfully performed liver transplantation on an Omani woman with cancerous tumours. Both the recipient and the donor are in good health.

H E Dr Ahmed Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health on Tuesday visited the donor and the patient who underwent the first liver transplantation which was carried out by a team led by Professor Mohamed Rela, stated a press release.

Prof Rela conducted the surgery with the assistance of The Royal Hospital medical and nursing staff. The minister applauded the achievement that was accomplished in collaboration with one of the Indian hospitals.

Meanwhile, H E Dr Saeedi has encouraged individuals to register in the National Organ Donation Program to facilitate such life-saving operations.

Dr Qasim al Salmi, director, The Royal Hospital stated that the surgery is the result of a two-year liver transplantation training programme for the hospital cadre in one of world's most comprehensive liver-disease management centre.

He added that the equipment and medical devices too were key to the surgery. He pointed out that the success of the surgery for the patient is a way forward for the expansion and development of a paediatric liver transplantation unit next year. The transplantation involved two phases: Pre-operation and the liver transplantation operation itself.

Before the operation, the donor has to undergo several fitness tests. The tests are done to confirm that the donor and patient are blood group compatible.

The tests also assess the size of the donor's liver and health and confirm that the donor is free of any chronic and communicable diseases. The procedure represents in illustrating the donor's liver delicately, and then extracting a portion of 60 per cent to 65 per cent from the donor's liver.

Afterwards, a full extraction of the patient's liver is made and finally the donated liver is connected to the blood vessels and cystic duct of the patient.

Prof Rela said that they have conducted the surgery on a woman with a liver disease and her young son donated half of his liver.
