Palestinian gov't takes over in Gaza


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GAZA, Oct 2 (KUNA) -- The Palestinian government of national accord started taking over in Gaza Strip on Monday, its spokesman Youssef Al-Mahmoud said.

"This is a historic day for the Palestinian people which signals the end of political divide and reunion of institution," he told KUNA tonight during the visit to Gaza by Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah and his cabinet members.

The cabinet will convene its weekly meeting here tomorrow, Tuesday, to discuss a range of urgent issues foremost among which are the humanitarian needs of the people in Gaza, the spokesman revealed.

"It's a top priority for the government to deliver on its commitments and press ahead with the reconciliation process as per the accords recently reached by Fatah and Hamas in Cairo.

"The two movements are scheduled to meet next week to evaluate the situation on the ground after the government assumption of responsibility," he added.

Palestinian activists called for demonstrations at the cabinet building in Gaza to welcome the government takeover during tomorrow's cabinet meeting. (pickup previous) wab.amm.gb
