Free driving for electric car owners

(MENAFN) By letting energy companies use their batteries in order to increase the start of the cleaner vehicles and help power suppliers manage the growth in green energy, electric car owners will get paid instead of paying for transportation.

According to the electricity supplier Ovo, savings from a new system will cover the GBP350-GBP400 annual cost of charging a Nissan Leaf.

Nissan and one of the UK's biggest challenger energy suppliers, Ovo, will offer the "vehicle-to-grid" service to buyers of the Japanese car brand's new Leaf starting next year.

The supplier will take control over the new car's battery, after installing a special charger in a customer's house, allowing the car owner to set a minimum amount of charge for the next day driving.

Ovo will then automatically trade electricity from the battery, topping it up during off-peak periods when power costs about 4p per kilowatt hour (kWh), and selling it at peak times for about four times as much.
