Jordan- Somali refugee suspected of Edmonton terror attack

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Ottawa, Oct. 2 (Petra)-- The terrorist attack in the Edmonton, capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, that left a police officer stabbed and four other people injured late Sunday, was the work of a single suspected terrorist, the Somalia refugee Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, Canadian Police said.

Marlin Degrand, assistant commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, said at a news conference in Edmonton that the suspect who is 30, was known to the police, adding that he was flagged in 2015 for extremist ideologies and police interviewed him at the time, but he said charges were not warranted after an exhaustive investigation.

Degrand explained the suspect has yet to be charged, but is under arrest for offences including participation in a terrorist attack, commission of an offence for a terrorist group, four counts of attempted murder, dangerous driving, criminal flight causing bodily harm, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The suspect in the attacks was apprehended following a high-speed chase just before midnight through streets filled with bar patrons and Edmonton Eskimos football fans. Police have said they believe the man acted alone.
