Oman- Seeb residents cry foul over rat menace

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Residents in and around Seeb wilayat have been complaining of an increasing rat menace in their neighbourhood despite attempts to control the population. Some people think the waste water pipelines are acting as breeding areas for these rodents.

But Haya Water, the company in charge of the wastewater network has denied the possibility and said that the problem may be due to the empty septic tanks in nearby areas that have not been filled or covered properly. Residents in Mawaleh and Al Hail area say the problem increased after the waste water connection was established in the area.

'We have seen rodents come from waste water pipelines. We are not sure why there has been an increase. I am afraid for my children. My neighbours too have seen rats in our area often,' said an Al Hail resident who did not wish to be named. A Mawaleh resident too said he has seen rats around his place and wasn't sure if it was due to the abandoned septic tank.

'I saw some rats in my house recently in the toilets. My children were quite scared. We had never seen rats at home. I don't know if it is due to my old septic tank that hasn't been removed. I did not do it as I was not sure if I was supposed to do it,' said Hamad Sultan.

A waste water network is already up and running in Al Hail and Mawaleh and people were asked to cover their old septic tanks. According to Haya Water, rats cannot survive in the waste pipeline network because of the presence of chemicals. 'It is next to impossible for rats to survive in such deep pipelines that too with chemicals. The lines are around 3m deep,' the official told Muscat Daily.
