Two city exhibitions fete German art and design

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar Museums (QM) chairperson HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani inaugurated two distinct exhibitions yesterday the ‘Driven by German Design' at QM Gallery Al Riwaq and ‘German Encounters: Contemporary Masterworks from the Deutsche Bank Collection' at the Doha Fire Station.
The shows, organised by QM in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region, the German embassy in Doha and the Qatar embassy in Germany, are major highlights of the Qatar Germany 2017 Year of Culture. They will be open to the public from tomorrow (October 3).
The event was attended by Germany's former president Christian Wulff, German ambassador Hans-Udo Muzel, Volkswagen Group chairman of the board of management Matthias Muller, dignitaries and guests.
‘Driven by German Design' showcases more than 400 objects, including a number of studies and prototypes never been shown in public before while ‘German Encounters' features over 100 masterpieces by 27 of Germany's most significant contemporary artists from the Deutsche Bank Collection.
For the ‘Driven by German Design', organisers set up five exhibition areas to the most important periods of post-war German design, showcasing the works of more than 30 designers that have influenced design history in both Germany and around the world. 'The Driven by German Design exhibition brings the best of German culture to the people of Qatar and the region by celebrating more than six decades of the country's most famous design icons, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa said in a statement. 'Its success is the result of deep collaboration between an enormous range of partners and truly demonstrates the rich cultural relationships between our two countries, the QM Chairperson added.
‘Driven by German Design' forms part of the vision of its curator, Martin Roth, who passed away during the final stages of the show's preparations. He is known as one of the most innovative and active cultural managers of the last decades.
The show, which will run until January 14, 2018, brings together for the first time different design disciplines, including architecture, graphic design, product design, automotive design, fashion and furniture design. Marking the evolution and achievements of German design, the show also offers visitors various insights into both the artistic value of developments in design and their cultural significance by showcasing design concepts and works created in Germany or developed by German designers since 1945.
QM will hold a series of workshops and talks about theoretical and practical aspects of design led by experts such as Vitra Design Museum director Dr Mateo Kries and Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences professor Lutz Fugener. Such activities will give university students the chance to work on a project together with the world-renowned Porsche Design Studio, QM stressed.
Organisers set up a design lab, which was co-developed by Volkswagen Group, at the centre of the exhibition to provide visitors a window into design processes. 'This retrospective of 70 years of German design has a close connection with Volkswagen Group and its brands. Many of our vehicles have given expression to the zeitgeist of their era as well as shaping German cultural identity, Muller said.
Goethe-Institut Gulf Region director Dr Gabriele Landwehr added that speakers who will guide the visitors will allow them to enjoy a history lesson on German design.
