Russia underlines Iraqi sovereignty post Kurdish independence vote


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Sept 26 (KUNA) -- Russia on Tuesday said that it remains firmly committed to protect the sovereignty of Iraq, in the wake of a Kurdish referendum to secede from Baghdad.

Protecting the sovereignty of nations is crucial to ensure peace and stability in the region, Interfax News Agency cited Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.

He pointed out that the Kurdish referendum was the focal point of phone conversations Putin had with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts recently.

Putin is expected to visit Turkey on Thursday for talks over the Kurdish situation.

Iraqi Kurdistan on Monday went through with a vote for independence, despite vehement opposition from the international community. (end) aas.nam
