Army Commander Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake says he had told Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran that everyone needs to work together to take the country forward.

Senanayake commended a recent meeting held between Wigneswaran and the Chief Prelates in Kandy.

He said that he had telephoned the Chief Minister and welcomed his meeting with the Chief Prelates and noted the need to work together for the sake of the country.

He said the Army will continue to work with the Tamils in the North and East to rebuild their lives and infrastructure.

The Army Commander asserted that the military fought the war against the LTTE and not against the Tamil community.

He also denied claims that there are over 180,000 troops in the North and East. (Colombo Gazette)
