(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Sept. 26 (Petra) -- Spokesperson of the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Eric Barbee, underlined the United States' commitment to Jordan's security and economic stability.
In a statement issued Tuesday evening, Barbee said the U.S. is still the largest individual donor to the Jordan Response Plan to the Syrian crisis (JRP), with a total humanitarian assistance of about $7.4 billion since the beginning of the crisis, including assistance to the affected inside Syria, as well as in the neighboring areas.
He pointed out that a recent report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) said there was a discrepancy in the accounts of donor funds - including funds from the United States in education.
& quot; There is no doubt that there is no difference in funding, & quot; he said. & quot; This difference comes from a HRW researcher, who has different research systems that follow the various funding objectives. The United States has exceeded all the commitments it made at the London conference in February 2016, & quot; Barbee added.
On the development assistance, the U.S. official noted that the United States pledged $290 million to support public education for Syrian children in Lebanon and Jordan.
& quot; With this assistance the United States has fulfilled its commitment to the London Conference by providing $267 million for education to Jordan, while remaining funds went to Lebanon and to regional programs of both countries, & quot; he said.
To meet the challenge of rapid population growth as a result of the influx of refugees, Barbee mentioned that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Jordanian government, is modernizing, expanding and building 259 schools to alleviate the overcrowding of Jordanian students and refugee students.
& quot;We support reading and math programs to help students stay in school and train teachers to meet the students' psychosocial needs, & quot; he added.
& quot; The United States remains committed to strengthening an already strong partnership with the Jordanian government to improve the lives of millions of Jordanians and Syrians alike, & quot; he concluded.
