Oman's smaller regional airports show signs of immense growth


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Apart from Oman's main gateway to the world, Muscat International Airport, the sultanate's smaller regional airports are showing signs of immense growth with major regional airlines now flying from airports in Salalah and Sohar.

Salalah Airport witnessed over 1mn passengers in the first eight months. According to figures released by the Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC), around 19,000 passengers passed through Sohar Airport from late June till the end of August. While 236 flights operated from the airport during the same period.

With major industrial activity undergoing in Duqm, the airport in the city saw the passenger traffic increase by 26.7 per cent from 16,330 (January-August 2016) to 20,528 passengers in the same period in 2017.

The number of aircraft also increased 16.7 per cent year on year (January-August) from 276 to 322. With the new Salalah Airport offering world class services and the city promoted as a year round destination, the passenger traffic at the airport increased by 25.3 per cent to over one million in the first eight months of this year from 824,574 travellers in the same period last year.

The number of aircraft also increased by 41.8 per cent from 6,959 to 9,870 in the same period a year on year. The cargo traffic in Salalah increased by 20.5 per cent to over 1mn kg of cargo and mail during the same period. Muscat International Airport continues to show solid growth with 9.36mn passengers going through the airport from January-August 2017, an year on year increase of 17.6 per cent. While aircraft movement increased by 12 per cent, cargo and mails rose by 29.7 per cent over the same time frame.
