(MENAFN- The Conversation) As a social scientist, I am interested in unintended effects of media use. I have studied people's perceptions of crime, law enforcement, the medical world etc, and have tried to examine how that is tied to exposure to fiction in the media (mainly TV)
As an epidemiologist, I became interested in health effects of media use behavior. I have looked at eating behavior, exercise, substance abuse, and many other things, but have gradually become more and more engrossed in sleep research. Nothing competes with sleep as much as out media use does.
I was born in Belgium and worked at the University of Leuven for 25 years before moving to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 2016.
