1) What is the name of the treatment?
FRACTIONAL CO2 LASER TREATMENT
Fractional CO2 Laser is one of the most versatile lasers used in the cosmetic dermatology today because of the array of skin conditions that can benefit from this laser treatment.
2) What is used to treat?
The Fractional CO2 laser can be used with different parameters in treating successfully skin conditions like:
  • Acne scars: Hyper pigmented or deep acne scars.
  • Wrinkles and skin laxity, preventing ageing process.
  • Stretch marks (post-pregnancy or after rapid weight loss / weight gain)
  • Pigmentation (sun spots, freckles and melisma reduction).
  • Post-surgical and post-traumatic scars, birthmarks, mole and warts removal.
  • Vaginal rejuvenation and urine incontinence.
  • Dark circles around the eyes.
3) What is the technology behind this (in layman terms)
The latest CO2 Fractional Resurfacing Laser is a break-through technology that makes microscopic holes & penetrates with heat deep into skin removing about 20 to 30 per cent of the total skin surface during one session. CO2 has different wavelengths and different depth penetration in the skin and 'it can treat almost every skin condition with minimal downtime and pain, says Olimpia Carmen, Laser & Skin Care Specialist and Anti-Aging Expert at Wellbeing Medical Centre.
4) Please describe the treatment itself, pain factor if any, how many sessions required.
The beauty of this laser stays in the fact that the skin isn't traumatized entirely on the surface explains Olimpia Carmen. The laser makes microscopic holes and burns tiny channel wounds deep into the skin, getting rid of old skin cells and revealing brand-new skin, so results are immediate.
The treatment itself is not painful since an anesthetic cream is applied for 30-45 minutes prior the treatment for a prolonged numbing effect.
During the laser skin resurfacing procedure, we apply the Fractional CO2 laser to the treated area. The laser works to vaporize surface blemishes, fine wrinkles and old or damaged skin cells. In the same time it heats the underlying collagen layer, stimulating its production and giving more volume and life to your skin. It does all this while causing minimal damage to healthy skin cells.
Immediately after the laser treatment, the patient will feel have a sun-burn sensation for about two hours. A healing cream is used for the next seven days to help speeding out the skin recovery. Downtime is four days, with redness and swelling for two and peeling for four, with minimal to no discomfort at all. This is a very attractive option for those with deep-set wrinkles and acne scars.
Usually a few sessions are required with an interval of four to eight weeks to achieve good results but it depends on case to case basis as some skin conditions would require 2-3 sessions while very deep scars might need 4 to 5 etc.
'Anyone who has sun damaged, aging skin, irregularly pigmented skin, wrinkles, sagging, irregular texture of the skin or other skin condition can get benefit from this Fractional CO2 laser treatment, says Olimpia. The laser also stimulates the body's natural collagen production so the final results will be shown over the next few months.
'This is an ideal non-invasive treatment to prevent the ageing process and just one treatment per year from the age of 30 can prevent the wrinkles formation says Olimpia.
5) Post treatment results and final results?
The results are very significant and noticeable after one session only: the skin becomes lighter and softer, the age spots and sun damaged skin will brighten up, the fine lines and wrinkles will get even, the scarring and textural irregularities will get less visible, a thinned collagen layer will get more volume, etc. The skin will continue to improve for a period of 6 months following the procedure provided proper skincare is used and sun exposure is minimized. Sometimes the results are not significant from the first session, until the 6th one, depending on the person's age, their aftercare routine and their history of smoking.
6) Why is this something you think needs to be included in our skincare/beauty regime?
No matter how severe your acne scars or post-traumatic scars are, you don't have to live with these blemishes on your face. In fact, you can experience a smoother skin texture and a generally improved appearance by undergoing the scars removal treatments. While these treatments might require a bit of recovery time, they provide real time results for those dealing with unsightly deep scars or stretch marks, etc
CO2 fractional laser skin resurfacing is one of the most effective laser treatments. Known as a laser peel, this is the most demanded and result-oriented cosmetic procedure for acne scar treatment: it rejuvenates skin removing the damaged outer layers of the skin, stimulating the production of collagen, bringing out smoother and younger looking skin.
Fractional CO2 laser can be included in our routine maintenance as anti-aging treatment alone, or in combination with other treatments, for more complex and long lasting results. It is believed that this type of laser treatment can take ten years off your face.
Your skin will continue to age as time goes on due to sun exposure, environmental stress, overall health and lifestyle choices such as smoking.
To maintain your results we recommend a healthy skincare routine after the laser peel, including cosmeceutical products, and other procedures as directed by your specialist.
