
Sri Lankan President returns after briefing UN General Assembley
A statement by his office said this was the third time that President Sirisena addressed the UN General Assembly since being elected to office.
In his address to the UN the President had apprised the world leaders regarding the policies of the country and called upon the international community to seriously consider the tremendous progress made by his government towards reconciliation, restoration of democratic freedoms, human rights and the rule of law.
Sirisena stressed that the vision of the government is to ensure sustained economic development through the increase of domestic agriculture and industry under an environment friendly policies and programs.
He also emphasized the imperative need to adhere to the Paris Protocol on Climate Change for the sake of the future of all human beings as well as flora and fauna.
During his visit, Sirisena held bilateral talks with Pakistan's new Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Thomas A. Shannon and the Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.
He also met with Prince Zeid al-Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and said that Sri Lanka was performing for the betterment of its people with much responsibility, in keeping with the charters of the UN, as a member of United Nations.
Sirisena also met UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
