Israel approves more construction in Jewish settlements


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Ramallah, Sept 24 (Petra) –– The Israeli government has endorsed the construction of 11,700 housing units in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank since the start of the year and let settlers to build more without government approval, according to Palestinian sources.

Walid Assaf, the Palestinian Authority's Chairman of the Commission Against the Wall and Settlements, said that Israel had over the past six months endorsed "structural charts" for expansion of 122 settlements.

He said in a report issued today by the commission that the plan envisaged the annexation of hundreds of dunums of Palestinian-owned land for each settlement for the infrastructure in the expansion scheme.

Assaf also referred to plans to annex settlements in occupied East Jerusalem and Hebron, adding that 800 extremist settlers now live in the heart of Hebron.
