Jordan- Minister inspects repair of highway after Iraq reopens border

Amman, Sept 23 (Petra) –– Minister of Public Works and Housing Sami Halasa Saturday toured the desert road leading to the Iraqi border, three weeks after Baghdad's decision to reopen the border crossing with Jordan.

The minister said the inspection tour of Azraq, Safawi and the Al Karamah border areas was to check on the maintenance and traffic safety needs of the highway after the Iraqi government reopened the Treibil land route, a move which officials on both sides hoped would enhance cross-border trade between the two neighbouring countries.

The minister, who was accompanied by the contractor of the road maintenance project, said repair work will take place simultaneously with an increase in transport on the highway, which will positively affect the speed and safety of vehicles and reactivate bilateral trade.
