Egypt voices concern about Iraqi Kurdistan referendum


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- Egypt has expressed deep concern about an independence referendum slated for Sunday in Iraqi Kurdistan.

In a statement on Thursday, the foreign ministry in Cairo stressed the necessity of realizing the long-term repercussions of the public vote on security and stability, not only in Iraq but in the Middle East at large.

It called for reactivating the mechanisms that are likely to allow further dialogue between the central government in Baghdad and the Iraqi Kurdistan region on issues of disagreement, for concluding a consensus that could preserve Iraq's unity an destinies, and help the country restore its role on the regional and international arenas.
