Kuwait calls anew for solving Syrian conflict peacefully

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- Kuwait on Thursday called anew for solving the Syrian conflict peacefully and in line with relevant UN resolutions, while commending UN's Syrian envoy Staffan de Mistura's endeavors to solve the crisis as soon as possible.
"Kuwait reaffirms again importance of doubling efforts to find a peaceful resolution in line with Security Council resolutions, specially resolution 2554," First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said in a speech before a ministerial meeting over Syria, hosted by the EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in New York.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said the Syrian conflict has entered its seventh year, making it the biggest humanitarian catastrophes in "our modern times." The conflict, which broke out in March 2011, killed more than 400,000 people and injured many others. The crisis displaced some 12 million people.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled commended relentless efforts by de Mistura and hoped they would contribute to a speedy solution of the crisis.
He noted that Kuwait, out of its keenness to help the Syrian people, hosted three international donor conferences in 2013, 2014 and 2015, in addition to co-chairing other donor meetings in London and Brussels.
Kuwait, he added, contributed USD 1.6 billion in the five conferences, besides USD 250 million to support educational, health and infrastructure facilities in the countries hosting the Syrian refugees.
The State of Kuwait, noted the country's chief diplomat, also allocated USD 50 million to support education in Lebanon.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled called on all countries which announced pledges during the previous five conferences to honor their commitment in order to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people either at home or in refugee camps abroad.
Today's meeting was a follow-up to a conference held in the Belgian capital, Brussels, last April, co-chaired by Kuwait, Germany, Norway, Qatar, Britain, the UN and the EU. It aimed at assessing the progress in assisting the Syrian people.
The delegation accompanying Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled included Assistant Foreign Minister for the Foreign Minister's Office Ambassador Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Nasser Al-Sabah, Kuwait Permanent Representative to the UN Mansour Al-Otaibi and Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations Nasser Al-Hayyen.
