US donates USD 697 mln. to conflict-hit Syrians

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- The US pledged more than USD 697 million in humanitarian assistance to those effected by the crisis in Syria, bringing the total aid since 2011 to USD 7.4 billion.

"This assistance reflects the continued generosity of the American people and demonstrates steadfast US commitment to helping address the unprecedented magnitude of suffering and urgent humanitarian needs," said a State Department release on Thursday.

This money will support UN operations, other international organizations, and non-governmental organizations across the region.

"Through this support, the United States will continue to provide emergency food, shelter, safe drinking water, urgent medical care, humanitarian protection activities, and other urgent relief to help the 13.5 million people suffering inside Syria," said the State Department.

USD 516 million will go to work directly in Syria but the remaining amounts will be allocated to refugee programs in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt. (end) ak.gb
