(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Sept 22 (KUNA) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday called on countries at loggerheads in the Arabian Gulf region to sit to the negotiating table to reach a consensual agreement, which he said could be done.
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt are at odds with Qatar, and Kuwait is carrying out mediation to resolve the differences.
"These countries have to get to the negotiating table and agree on a consensual agreement," Lavrov told a news conference at the UN.
"I believe this can be done," he added.
Lavrov visited Kuwait recently, as part of a regional tour, and held talks with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He reiterated support for Kuwait's mediation to solve the crisis.
The Russian chief diplomat said that President Vladimir Putin had contacted leaders of the region in a bid to work out a solution to the problem.
Many Arab and Western countries -including the US, Russia and the Europeans- have also thrown their weight behind the Kuwaiti mediation. (end) bs.asf
