Tillerson, C5+1 leaders discuss ways to promote Afghanistan's economic development

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (KUNA) - US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and the Foreign Ministers of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan held a ministerial level meeting Friday in New York, during which they discussed ways "to promote Afghanistan's economic development within a regional framework." State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement that they also "recommitted to further deepening cooperation through engagement in the C5+1 format." The C5+1 is "a format for dialogue and a platform for joint efforts to address common challenges faced by the United States and the five Central Asian states," the State Department noted, complementing bilateral relationships in the region, "particularly in issue areas where regional approaches may provide a comparative advantage." Since the inception of C5+1, the Central Asian countries "have been increasingly interested in regional approaches and view it as a catalyst for common action." The C5+1 projects include Counter-Terrorism, Central Asia Business Competitiveness, Transport Corridor Development, Power the Future and Supporting National and Regional Adaptation Planning.
