(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has announced the cancellation of his official visit to Ukraine because of the law on education approved by the Verkhovna Rada.
He stated this at a press conference in New York on September 21 before leaving for Bucharest, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"I have decided to cancel my visit to Ukraine after I learned about the adopted law on education. I also canceled a meeting with the Verkhovna Rada speaker scheduled for the end of September," Iohannis said.
He said that there were careful preparations for his visit to Ukraine in October, however, he was "unpleasantly surprised" that the Verkhovna Rada, "without prior discussions with Ukraine's partners," had still adopted a law that "strictly restricts the rights of national minorities to study in their native language." The president also recalled that about 400,000 Romanians live in Ukraine.
According to Iohannis, he conveyed his concern to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko during his brief meetings in New York, where the UN General Assembly session is being held.
On September 20, the Romanian parliament adopted a declaration expressing concern about the adoption of the new law on education.
