Mumbai Rains: Flight operations, local train services badly hit

Torrential rains continued to batter Mumbai for the second day, severely affecting the flight operations, delaying the suburban rail services, and disrupting the road traffic.
The incessant downpour led to the cancellation of over 70 flights as the main runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport remained non-operational.
The government instructed all schools and colleges in Mumbai Metropolitan Region to remain closed today.

Flight Operations
While nearly 75 flights were cancelled owing to the bad weather at Mumbai airport, over 50 were diverted.
A SpiceJet flight skid on the main runway while landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport last night; the incident has disrupted air traffic.
All 183 passengers were reportedly safe but the runway is out of use as the aircraft is still stuck there.

According to Mumbai Police, traffic movement is normal except for diversions at some places due to water-logging.
Officials said rail services on the Main and Harbour lines were running with lesser frequency and restricted speed; Western line services are delayed by 10-15 minutes.
Between 8:30am yesterday and 5:30am today, IMD's Santacruz observatory recorded 303.7mm rainfall while the one in Colaba recorded 210mm rain.
Light to moderate rains predicted

A BMC official said: "Several parts of the metropolis, including South Mumbai, Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri, and Bhandup, received heavy rainfall. However, no untoward incident has been reported so far." The meteorological department said Mumbai would receive light to moderate showers in the next 24 hours.
