UN stands ready to assist following deadly earthquake in Mexico

NEW YORK, 20th September, 2017 (WAM) -- UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has voiced sadness at the loss of life and damage resulting from the earthquake that occurred in Mexico yesterday, and expressed the readiness of the United Nations to assist, the UN News centre has reported.

In a statement issued by the Secretay-General's Spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, he said, "Today's disaster comes just two weeks after the country suffered a strong earthquake, which already resulted in significant loss of life and suffering."

According to media reports, over 200 people have been killed, including scores in the state of Morelos, which was close to the epicentre of the 7.1-magnitude quake. Dozens were also killed in the capital, Mexico City.

The Secretary-General extended his condolences to the government and people of Mexico and wished those injured a speedy recovery. He also commended the government and the civil society for their speedy response.
