Trump, Qatar's Amir emphasize bilateral cooperation


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump met with the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on Tuesday in New York where they discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and advance security across the Middle East.

During the discussion the leaders emphasized "the benefits of increasing bilateral investments, which create jobs and stimulate growth in both countries," said a White House statement which elaborated on remarks Trump made to reporters earlier.

In regards to the GCC crisis, they discussed resolving the dispute and "restoring unity in the region among partners of the United States in order to promote regional stability and counter the threat of Iran," the statement noted.

Trump acknowledged Qatar's implementation of a US-Qatar memorandum of understanding on counterterrorism.

He also stressed the importance of "taking additional steps to follow through on commitments from the Riyadh Summit to cut off funding for terrorists, discredit extremist ideology, and defeat terrorist groups." (end) ak
