On Dawood's behalf, Kaskar allegedly used threats to extort huge sums of money from builders in Thane, Ulhasnagar and Dombivli. One of the builders lodged an extortion complaint, the police said.

Times of India reported that the complainant approached Parambir Singh, the Thane police commissioner, who directed Sharma to proceed with the investigation after examining the evidence.
