Qatar's proactive policy of war on extremism and terrorism is a constructive option that addresses the social roots of the abhorrent phenomenon, said Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

Fighting against terrorism should not be confined to the security dimension, but also should focus on addressing economic and social causes that lead to despair and extremism, he added.

The Foreign Minister was yesterday addressing the first Ministerial meeting of the follow-up mechanism of 'Tunis-2020 International Conference on Economic and Investment Support in New York.

Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani announced, during the 'Tunis 2020 Conference, Qatar's contribution with $1.25bn to support Tunisia's economy and enhance its development path.

The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of this support in creating job opportunities for youth and contributing to solving the problem of unemployment and addressing causes that leads to violence and extremism.
Qatar Development Fund has allocated $250m as loans to support a number of important investment projects in Tunisia in some sectors including education, health and economic empowerment within the framework of the Qatari contribution, he said.

'For two decades, Qatar has partnered with the United States, the United Nations, and key allies to address terrorism and extremism wherever it exists at home, in the region, globally, said Abdulaziz Al Ansari, Chairman of National Counter-Terrorism Committee. 'This year Qatar was presented with the opportunity to further enhance cooperation with American intelligence and law enforcement agencies around counter-terrorism and be the first and only country in the region to commit to this MoU.

'We signed the MoU because we seek to defeat terrorism in all forms and bring those that support it to justice.

Since the signing of the MoU, Qatar has built on its strong foundational programmes to address terrorism and extremism with: direct cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Central Bank, State Security, and Public Prosecution and the US State Department, Department of Treasury, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation; increased information sharing on known suspected terrorist and terrorist organisations with the US Department of Homeland Security; enhanced implementation of UNSC resolution designation groups and regular reports to the UN 1267 committee; enhancement of boarder control and aviation security on adherence with UNSC 2178; establishment of a fully functional and operational domestic designations regime; independent audits and review of informal financial and charitable sector; protocols for capacity building, technical assistance and training expertise with the Department of Justice and Department of Treasury.
