UK to supply Qatar with 24 Typhoon fighter jets

Doha, Qatar:The Minister of State of Defense Affairs H E Dr Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah and Secretary of State for Defense of the United Kingdom Michael Fallon today signed a Letter of Intent at the Ministry's headquarters, which aims to strengthen cooperation and mutual support in the military and technical fields.

The Directorate of Moral Guidance at the Ministry of Defense announced that the Letter of Intent also includes Ministry's proposed purchase 24 Typhoon aircraft.

UK Defence Secretary welcomed Qatar's intent to proceed with the purchase of Typhoon aircraft and further strengthening of the United Kingdom's defence relationship with Qatar.

Both Ministers discussed aspects of cooperation in the military field, especially in the field of combatting terrorism and extremism.

The meeting also discussed the most important regional issues.

The UK and Qatar share a close and longstanding defence relationship, and today's Letter of Intent further reinforces this, deepening military cooperation between the two.

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said: 'This will be the first major defence contract with Qatar, one of the UK's strategic partners. This is an important moment in our defence relationship and the basis for even closer defence co-operation between our two countries.

The Typhoon is a multi-role combat aircraft that has long-term potential to be at the forefront of air power for many years.

In addition to supporting Royal Air Force operations, the Typhoon has already been purchased by eight nations around the world.
