Hamas to dissolve administrative cmte in Gaza, hold elections

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Gaza, Sept 17 (KUNA) -- Palestinian party Hamas announced on Sunday it would dissolve its self-declared government administrative committee in the Gaza Strip and hold elections to boost Palestinian reconciliation efforts.

In a press release, the Gaza-based group said the move came in response to the Egyptian's mediation, led by Cairo's Intelligence Service in the spirit of "fulfilling national unity".

Hamas urged the West Bank reconciliation government to head to the Strip to "practice its duties immediately" amid the Cairo 2011 agreement to launch public elections.

The movement expressed its readiness to meet Egypt's call to initiate dialogue with Fatah regarding the means of implementing the agreement.

The agreement calls for the formation of a national unity government with the participation of all the Palestinian factions whom signed the agreement.

Numerous Palestinian factions, including Fatah, in press remarks welcomed the move, considering it a step towards ending the national divide.

However, Fatah said it remained cautious until the steps were fully implemented. (end) wab.lb
