Saudi Arabia offers mediation between Baghdad and Kurds

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Baghdad, Sept. 17 (Petra) -- Saudi Arabia has offered to mediate between the Kurdish regional government and Baghdad amid rising tensions over a planned Kurdish referendum for independence from Iraq, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

It said that Saudi Arabia's Arab Gulf Affairs minister, Thamer Al Sabhan, met with President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Masoud Barzani on Sunday, expressing his country's mediation for laying the ground of dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad.

Barzani said the autonomous Kurdish region has not "closed the door for dialogue with anyone", the statement added.

Kurds have been met with increasing global pressure to hold off on the referendum expected in September, 25.
