Ministers discuss future of EU monetary union

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Sept 15 (KUNA) -- European Union economic and financial affairs ministers held an informal meeting in Tallinn, Estonia Friday and emphasized that the strength of the entire EU is dependent on the strength of the economic and monetary union.

"During today's meeting there was a certainty expressed in that the better utilization of the potential of the economic and monetary union is one of the most important aspects of the future of the EU," Toomas Toniste, the Minister for Finance of Estonia, whose country holds the current EU Presidency, told a news conference after the meeting.

He stressed that a stronger economic and monetary union supports the economic development of EU member states and increases overall resilience to potential crises.

The ministers also discussed the development of the digital economy and issues of the digital market. Meanwhile, finance ministers of the 19-member Eurogroup also held an informal meeting in Tallinn and discussed the economic recovery in the EU and the state of play of Greece's ongoing economic adjustment program.

"Let me first make a remark on the ongoing economic recovery.

I'm not sure whether we should even talk about recovery anymore. In the Eurozone, growth keeps picking up, it is set to remain robust, it's broad-based, and it is across all our countries.

Of course, risks remain and work needs to be done to deal with those risks, but confidence is ever increasing and I think that's hugely welcome," President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, told a press conference after the meeting. On Greece, he said, technical teams are now in Athens, fact-finding and preparing the grounds, so that later on the third review of the economic situation can get off to a quick start. "The idea is to finish that before the end of the year. More work needs to be done of course on a number of issues some of which were already mentioned today," he added. (end) nk.mb
