US condemns IS attacks in Nasiriyah, Iraq
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Sept 14 (KUNA) -- The US condemned, in the strongest possible terms, twin attacks that occurred in Nasiriyah, Iraq that the so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert announced Thursday.
"The brutal attacks demonstrate, once again, the savagery of the enemy that so many of our nations face," Nauert told reporters. "We want to extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and hope for a speedy recovery for those who've been wounded." At least 60 people were killed after a suicide bomber detonated a vest and gunmen fired shots inside a restaurant. Not long after a car bomb exploded at a checkpoint nearby.
"The attacks are a reminder that all Iraqis must remain focused on defeating (IS)," said Nauert.
The US reaffirmed its commitment to support the Iraq in its fight against IS. (end) ak.mb
