The woman, who is from Jharkhand, arrived at New Delhi railway station at around 11 pm on Monday and planned to take a train to Ludhiana, which was scheduled to depart at 4.30 am on Tuesday. The woman left the waiting room at around 2 am, at which point Kumar initiated a conversation with her.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Jatin Narwal said 'He sat with her on the bench and lied to her, saying that her train had been cancelled. As the woman started to walk towards the ticket counter, the accused took the ticket, saying it would get cancelled only at 8 am. Then he offered to drop her off at a bus stand so that she could travel to Ludhiana by bus.'

Kumar allegedly took her to a secluded part of Golden Jubilee Park near the Red Fort and raped her. He then dropped her at the Old Delhi Railway Station and fled, the police said.
